Second thoughts

The trade that sent Darrelle Revis from the New York Jets to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drew the ire of Jets fan and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin.

For Jets fans, torture isn’t anything new

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, either the HBO show or the series of books upon which it’s based, you know that it’s set in a world where the foolhardy and incompetent meet ugly, cinematic ends.

This is in stark contrast to the NFL, where the foolhardy and incompetent are promoted and lionized.

George R.R. Martin, creator of the Game of Thrones empire, is no stranger to fictional torture, as not a single character in his far-ranging world survives a year unscathed. But perhaps as penance for the punishment he deals out to his characters, Martin is a fan of the New York Jets.

Now, in the wake of the Darrelle Revis trade, he’s had all he can stand.

“The best theory about this trade is that the Jets want the [No.] 1 pick overall in the 2014 draft,” Martin wrote. “Cause this next season is going to be bloody painful. After which our new whizz-bang ‘let’s give away our best player for a bag of old jockstraps’ GM [John Idzik] is going to fire Rex Ryan because, after all, that 2-14 record is clearly Rex’s fault.”

Pulling no punches

UFC light heavyweight challenger Chael Sonnen was the target of an unwieldy fan at the recent The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale in Las Vegas.

“[Chael] was shaking hands with everybody and some guy says, ‘Hey Chael,’ ” recounted UFC President Dana White. “Chael goes over there and the guy just starts swinging on him and started trying to punch him.”

White said the man identified himself as being from Brazil, a country full of people who sometimes take umbrage with Sonnen because of his vocal onslaught leading up to his fights with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who is Brazilian.

Sonnen confirmed the incident, although he was short on details.

“There were a lot of people around and my focus was in five different directions, including on him,” Sonnen said. “Ultimately, he got upset and he went to take a punch and security grabbed him and they took him out.

“I didn’t like seeing him leave.

He had very expensive and good seats and I wish he would have seen the show.”

White concurred, alluding to the possibility that the overzealous fan didn’t exactly leave under his own accord.

“It was a bad move,” stated White. “That guy didn’t get taken out of there politely.”

All natural

Detroit Tigers outfielder and Pine Bluff native Torii Hunter is leading the American League in batting at age 37.

“I have good genetics,” Hunter said. “I’m no steroids freak. I’m organic.”

This name will change

The new name of the four-team playoff that starts after the NCAA 2014 football season will be the “College Football Playoff.”
