Chase wins fellowship

Emily Chase, an art major and Honors College fellow atthe University of Arkansas, has received a Wingate Fellowship Award for exploring an unusual artform - life-size paper gowns.

Chase is the first UA student to win the award, which comes with a $15,000grant to aid her career. The Wingate Fellowship is one of three awards funded by the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

More than 70 universities are invited to nominate two graduating seniors for the award each year, but only 10 students are selected.

Chase has been folding, sewing and sculpting paper for several years. A flock of origami cranes she created was recently installed at the Arkansas Union, and three elaborate paper gowns comprise her honors thesis, currently on display as part of an exhibition at East Square Plaza on the Fayetteville square.

Chase painted, cut, scraped, pricked and scorched the paper garments to create her unique designs. She plans to leave for Japan soon after graduating to learn about Japanese traditions in paper crafts and clothing design.
