Earnings report

Companies reporting quarterly earnings Wednesday included:

General Dynamics, the maker of Abrams tanks and Gulfstream business jets, a profit of $571 million, or $1.62 a share, up from $564 million, or $1.57 a share, a year ago. Revenue fell 2.3 percent to $7.4 billion. Shares rose $4.63 to close at $71.73.

Northrop Grumman, the maker of Global Hawk surveillance drones, a profit of $489 million, or $2.03 a share, down from $506 million, or $1.96 a share, a year ago. Revenue fell 1.5 percent to $6.1 billion. Shares rose $2.28 to close at $73.77.

Procter & Gamble, the world’s largest consumer-product maker, a profit of $2.57 billion, or 88 cents a share, up from $2.41 billion, or 82 cents a share a year ago. Revenue rose 2 percent to $20.6 billion. Shares fell $4.82 to close at$77.12.

Sprint Nextel Corp., the cellphone company, a loss to $643 million, or 21 cents a share, up from with a loss of $863 million, or 29 cents a share. a year ago. Revenue edged up 0.7 percent to $8.79 billion. Shares fell 1 cent to close at $7.09.

WellPoint Inc., the second biggest U.S. health insurer, a profit of $885.2 million, or $2.89 a share, up from $856.5 million, or $2.53 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 15 percent to $17.7 billion. Shares rose $4 to close at $73.33.

Yum Brands Inc., owner of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, a profit of $337 million, or 72 cents a share, down from $458 million, or 96 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue fell 8 percent to $2.54 billion. Shares rose $4.50 to close at $68.65.
