NEWPORT - Mr. Tom Curtner of Newport, Ark., departedthis life on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the age of 86. He was born Thomas Robert Curtner on May 1, 1926, in Braggadocio, Mo., the second child of Luther Dempsey Curtner and Mary(Lewis) Curtner.

Mr. Curtner was a 1943 graduate of Braggadocio High School. Following high school, he attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., where he graduated in 1947 with a degree in industrial management. After college graduation, Mr. Curtner joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a 2nd Lieutenant on the USS Columbia in the North Atlantic from 1947-48. Mr. Curtner’s first job after serving in the military moved him to Memphis, Tenn., working for a glass company where he estimated material requirements for large construction projects. A year later, he began working as a salesman for a forklift company. These job opportunities set Mr. Curtner on the path of his life, as he became interested in the lumber business. Mr. Curtner was a member of the 6th Class of the National Hardwood Inspection School in 1949, in Memphis.

The move to Memphis not only set Mr. Curtner’s career path in motion, but also his family life. He and Miss Joan St. John were married on Feb. 14, 1950. The couple made their first home in Los Angeles, where Mr. Curtner had his first job in the lumber business. They then moved to Ft. Wayne, Ind., in 1953, where Mr. Curtner secured his first sales job with Townsend-Robertson Lumber Company. The family then moved to Mobile, Ala., where Mr. Curtner workedfor one year at the Mobile River Sawmill Company. In 1955, he accepted the position of sales manager for the Townsend Lumber Company in Stuttgart, Ark., which in 1961 built a second facility at the Newport, Arkansas Airbase Industrial Park.

Mr. Curtner purchased onethird interest in the Newport operation in 1964, and it was renamed Townsend-Curtner Lumber Company. For the next three years, he would commute from Stuttgart to Newport, until he purchased the remaining two thirds of the Newport plant, and on Jan. 1, 1967, Mr. Tom Curtner formed Curtner Lumber Company, which still operates today in it’s original location. Mr. Curtner was joined in the lumber business by his sons, Clay and Zack, who continue to operate Curtner Lumber Company.

The Curtner family made their home in Newport in the summer of 1967, where they became an active part of the community. Mr. Curtner joined the Newport Rotary Club in 1967 and remained a member until his death. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1990. In 1976, Mr. Curtner was named to the Merchants and Planters Bank Board of Directors and served on that board until December 2010. He also served as a Director of the Newport Country Club for several years. The Curtner family made their church home at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where Mr. Curtner served several terms on the Vestry. He was also instrumental in instituting the Annual Men’s Fellowship Dinners. Mr. and Mrs. Curtner were especially active and interested in the Children’s Christian Education of the church.

Over the years, Mr. Curtner served on many professional boards relating to the lumber industry. He was appointed by former Governor David Pryor to the Arkansas Forestry Commission in 1976, and he proudly served in that position for over 30 years. He also served as a director in the National Hardwood Lumber Association located in Memphis, Tenn., and the Hardwood Manufacturers Association located in Pittsburg, Penn. He was a member of the Lumberman’s Club of Memphis and the Westside Lumber Club of Little Rock.

Mr. Curtner had a great love of adventure, and he enjoyed sharing that love with family and friends. He loved travel, hunting and fishing. Mr. Curtner’s greatest love was his family; most treasured, however, were the adventures and memories he made with his grandchildren. Over the years he enjoyed many wonderful family adventures, both in the UnitedStates and abroad. Mr. Curtner had a special love of Alaska and enjoyed many trips fishing and sight-seeing with his family and friends.

Mr. Curtner was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jennifer Leigh Curtner, on March 30, 2007; and two brothers, Lewis Dempsey Curtner and Edward Luther “Ed” Curtner. Mr. Curtner is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan St. John Curtner of the home; two sons, Clay Curtner and wife, Elisabeth, of Newport and Zack Curtner and wife, Marcia, of Newport; two daughters, Melissa Curtner of Newport and Jennifer Bundrick and husband, Richard, of Springdale, Ark.; and nine grandchildren, Robert Curtner and wife, Rachel, Marion Curtner Donat and husband, Clark, Taylor Curtner, Jimbo Welch, Natalie Curtner, Caleb Bundrick, Thomas Welch, Jacob Bundrick and Katie Bundrick.

This good man was known by many names over his almost 87 years on this Earth: Tommy, Tom, Mr. Curtner, Mr. Tom, Dad and “Dah”. He will be missed by the lumber community, the residents of Jackson County, but none more than those who lovingly referred to him as “Dah” and considered him the “backbone of the Curtner Clan.”

Friends visited at the funeral home Tuesday, April 23, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Dr. Dan McKee officiating. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
