Ill-informed thinking

I understand more every day why Washington is referred to as the work free drug zone. What are they smoking? More gun control means more protection for our children? That has to be the most ill-informed thinking yet.

How many times does it need to be said for it to register that guns do not kill, people kill?

Barack Obama says that if we can do one thing that helps save the lives of children, we should do it. I agree, but it’s not more gun control. A mass murderer can achieve his goal with any number of improvised incendiary weapons-fertilizer bombs (remember Oklahoma), matches, a bag full of Molotov cocktails, poisons.

We can never remove all of the easily obtained substances available or outlaw all of the means that a mean or mentally ill person can use to kill.

Our focus should be on how to keep them away from our children and schools: metal detectors-they stopped the killing of judges-and double buzz-in doors. If Obama wants to spend some worthwhile money and really protect our children, why not subsidize such things?

I believe the truth to be that he doesn’t care about the children at all and Sandy Hook is being used as an excuse to disarm America and any possibility of a militia.

It’s one or the other-stupidity or better subjugation of the feisty, freedom-loving American people.

SUE RICHARDSON Bella Vista Make the right choice

After hearing all the pros and cons regarding abortion, I think it all boils down to whether a person believes that God created everything in this world.

When I was much younger, just out of high school, I wrestled with thoughts of whether abortion was right or wrong. I believed it was okay if that was what the woman wanted. However, when I accepted Jesus as my savior and began to devour the Bible, I knew, without any doubt, that abortion was terribly wrong.

When I read letters from women who proclaim to be Christians but believe what they do with their own bodies is their business, I cannot understand it. Not wanting the government to regulate this decision is one thing, but putting their rights before God’s is puzzling.

When God gave women the privilege to bear children, he gave us a precious, wonderful gift. I try not to think of all the sweet, innocent babies that have been lost since abortion became legal. However, I do know that they are all in heaven in a much better world than this one.

For all those who have had abortions, please be assured that if you truly are sorry for what you did, our God will forgive all. As stated in the Bible, it is as if this sin never happened. I’m sure that there will be all kinds of interesting rebuttals to this, but I felt compelled to proclaim what I’ve felt for so long and hope that this will help someone make a right decision.

SHIRLEY ROE Mountain Pine Was the worst of lines

In the wake of last Monday’s evil, humanity revealed its best, and its worst.

Nate Bell, you, sir, are the latter.

I’m a proud 1988 Mena High School graduate.

ROB SANDERS Mount IdaFind own happiness

Re Theresa Sims’ letter describing her experience as a school custodian at the college level and not being at the same elevation as a professor or coach: At age 89, I have seen lots of respect and disrespect displayed through nearly every strata of society.

A black man won everyone’s respect in the little West Texas town of Quanah where he made a living shining shoes in a barbershop and at night doing custodial work in the two small banks in town. Cliff never saw a stranger. He had a ready smile and a howdy for everyone he saw. We made sure he felt the respect he deserved because he was motivated to live a good, productive life and saw that his three children went on to get college degrees. He was a ready friend and joy to all who knew him.

People at every level of our society stick with or abandon their place of comfort or discomfort, happiness or unhappiness. I am reminded of the story of the high-society lady who filed for divorce from a very wealthy and successful surgeon. In court, the judge asked her what her reasons were for filing for divorce. She replied that it was a disagreement over religious matters. The judge pressed her to be more specific.

She said that her husband thought he was God and she didn’t agree with him. The judge hit his gavel and said, “Divorce granted.”

My motto: Strive to be happy; speak your truth; be yourself; be at peace with God.

W. PAGE HILL SpringdaleSounds brainwashed

It sure seems to me that people like Steve Hill of Bella Vista can get their letters on the Voices page by running down nonbelievers with their Christian beliefs.

As I read letters like Mr. Hill’s, it makes me think of cult leaders who have their people so brainwashed that they believe he has a right to have sex with all the men’s wives and daughters. This is not done in the name of atheism, but in the name of Jesus Christ.

I just don’t trust people like that.

BILL MORELAND RogersCustomer service dead

Has anyone else noticed the increasing lack of friendliness, or slow and inaccurate service at some fastfood restaurants, as well as certain retail establishments?

It’s as if employees received no formal training, and management is either not aware or is not concerned. The customer is no longer king. What a shame.

What can this demise in service be attributed to? What can be done to change this unfavorable treatment of others? Concerned customers would like to know.
