Witonski Resigns From Position

SPRINGDALE— Megan Witonski who was recently hired as deputy superintendent of personnel for the Springdale School District resigned Monday to take a job with the state, according to Phyllis Stewart, chief of staff for the Arkansas Department of Education.

Witonski is superintendent of the Elkins School District. She was scheduled to replace Hartzell Jones as deputy superintendent of personnel in Springdale on July 1, said Rick Schaeffer, director of communications for Springdale schools. Jones is to retire June 30.

Witonski will become assistant commissioner for learning services for the Department of Education on July 1, Stewart said.

"It's an opportunity for her to lead at the state level," Stewart said.

Witonski did not apply for the state position, but was selected by Tom Kimbrell, state commissioner of education, officials said.

"We recognize that Megan Witonski is one of the state's most outstanding young administrators," said Jim Rollins, superintendent of Springdale schools. "She will undoubtedly have an outstanding career in education, and her move to the state department will expand her influence. We wish her nothing but the best in her new role. In the meantime, we will begin the process of finding the best candidate to replace Hartzell Jones on our administrative staff."

Springdale administrators hope to fill the position by June 30, Schaeffer said.

"You're replacing the most experienced human being in the district," he said. "We have to start over again."

Several calls and an email to Witonski were not returned Tuesday.
