GOLF UALR second in Sun Belt

UALR’s men fired a 5-over-par 293 and trails South Alabama by nine strokes after the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

Arkansas State is in seventh place with a 300.

UALR’s Lane Hulse leads Middle Tennessee’s Lucas Armstrong in the individual standings by one stroke after firing a 4-under 68. Hulse’s teammate Nicklaus Benton is tied for third with South Alabama’s Tyler Klava after shooting a 70. UALR’s Colby Benton and Arkansas State’s Chance Holden each shot a 73 and are tied for 10th with Georgia State’s Tyler Garcia and Davin White Cappelen named to Palmer Cup team

Arkansas’ Sebastian Cappelen has been named to the European Palmer Cup team.

It will be the third Palmer Cup for Cappelen, who is from Denmark and recently won the SEC individual championship.

The Palmer Cup is similar to the Ryder Cup. It features collegiate golfers from the United States playing against similar golfers from Europe.

The tournament is to be played June 7-9 at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del.

UCA’S Roth named SLC golfer of the year

Central Arkansas senior Julia Roth was named the Southland Conference women’s player of the year after a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

Roth is the third UCA golfer to be named player of the year joining Rebecca Sorensen (2010) and Nicole Forshner (2008 2009). A native of Sweden, Roth is a three-time all-conference selection and joins Forshner as the only UCA players to earn first-team all-conference honors twice.

Roth averaged a league-best score of 74.0 in 29 rounds this season. In 10 tournaments, she finished in the top 10 every time including victories at the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational in September and at the Houston Baptist Husky Classic in April The senior also earned four second-place finishes and was the first Southland golfer to be named player of the month four times in one season.

SOFTBALL UCA’s Armstrong honored

Central Arkansas’ Kelsie Armstrong was named Southland Conference pitcher of the week for the fifth time this season.

Armstrong went 4-1 for the Bears, compiling an earned run average of 0.18 and holding opposing batters to a .172 batting average.
