ROGERS — Rogers Heritage came up with some timely hitting to go with solid pitching, and the combination resulted in a 10-0 victory over Fort Smith Northside in Class 7A nonconference baseball Monday evening at Veterans Park.

The War Eagles missed out on some early scoring chances a week ago in a nonconference game against Fort Smith Southside and lost 3-1. But Heritage took charge with a seven-run second inning this time.

Connor Cawthon and Troy Cahill each had two-run doubles to highlight the big inning and put the War Eagles (16-10) in control.

Heritage coach Keith Kilgore came away pleased with his team’s all-around effort.

“I’d say complete ballgame,” Kilgore said. “It was much needed. Northside’s a solid club fighting for a state tournament berth in the Central. When your team has a big inning, you’re gonna like the end result.

“We had some timely hits today, and that’s one thing we haven’t had a times. Defensively we were solid, and our pitchers did a good job.”

Cawthon was one of three War Eagles who finished 2-for-3. He also drove in three runs and scored once. Colton Wetzler also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Josh Qualls was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Northside coach Bryan Fry said Heritage’s big inning was tough to overcome.

“It kinda knocked the wind out of us,” Fry said. “We had some trouble hitting our spots and they took advantage and hit the ball hard on the ground.

“Offensively, we tried to hit the ball through this wind and it knocked everything down. We’ve got to do a better job. But give them credit.”

Three War Eagles pitchers combined on a two-hitter and faced one over the minimum over six innings. Sophomore left-hander Kacey Murphy (5-2) picked put the win with two scoreless innings, followed by senior Jayme Lovelace and Wetzler with two more scoreless innings each.

The trio combined to strike out four and walk one. Northside (9-11) managed only singles by Will Harris and Kyle McDonald. However, McDonald was picked off first base by Murphy to end the second.
