Fayetteville Named Green Ribbon School District

FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville School District has been honored by the U.S. Department of Education with the Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Award.

The district is the first one in Arkansas to receive the honor and one of 14 nationwide announced Monday by Secretary Arne Duncan. The districts were selected for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and green career pathways, according to a news release.

The district hired the first education sustainability coordinator in the state a year ago when Dana Smith, a former

Energy Corps worker, was named to the position, said Superintendent Vicki Thomas. Smith has led efforts with the Farm to School nutrition program, community and school gardens, the the High School Green Team recycling program and energy audits in the school buildings, Thomas said.
