Braun’s home run lifts Milwaukee before ejection

MILWAUKEE - Ryan Braun hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning then was ejected three innings later, and the Milwaukee Brewers won their seventh consecutive game, 4-2 over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

The Brewers are 18-2 over the past 20 meetings with the Cubs at Miller Park. Milwaukee improved to 9-8 after losing eight of 10 to start the year.

Wily Peralta (1-1) pitched 6 2/3 innings for Milwaukee, giving up 2 runs and 5 hits. John Axford got the final out of the seventh inning. Tom Gorzelanny pitched a scoreless eighth inning, but walked lead off hitter Nate Schierholtz in the ninth inning. Jim Henderson replaced him and got three outs for his fourth save in four chances.

Scott Feldman (0-3) gave up 4 runs on 3 hits in 5 innings.

REDS 10, MARLINS 6 Brandon Phillips drove in the go-ahead run for the second consecutive day, Joey Votto homered and collected three hits, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the visiting Miami Marlins for their sixth victory in seven games.

METS 2, NATIONALS 0 John Buck hit his seventh home run of the season, Dillon Gee earned his first victory and the host New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals to take two of three games from the NL East champions.

PIRATES 4, BRAVES 2 Slumping Clint Barmes had a pair of run-scoring singles for his first two RBI of the season, including a tie breaking hit in the sixth inning that led the host Pittsburgh Pirates over Atlanta 4-2 for their third consecutive win over the Braves.

GIANTS 5, PADRES 0 Barry Zito (3-1) and Chad Gaudin combined on a six-hitter, Buster Posey homered and the host San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres to complete a three game sweep.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, ROCKIES 4 Didi Gregorius hit his second major league home run and singled to start a two-run rally in the ninth inning that led the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks over Colorado and stopped the Rockies’ eight-game winning streak.

PHILLIES 7, CARDINALS 3 Erik Kratz hit a three-run home run to break the game open in the eighth inning and led host Philadelphia by St. Louis. Mike Adams (1-1) tossed a scoreless eighth inning to help the Phillies split the four-game series.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

BLUE JAYS 8, YANKEES 4 J.P. Arencibia hit a two-run home run, Melky Cabrera had three hits and the host Toronto Blue Jays rallied for a victory over the New York Yankees.

RAYS 8, ATHLETICS 1 Roberto Hernandez pitched six effective innings for his first victory since he was known as Fausto Carmona, and the host Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics. Hernandez (1-3) allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 3 walks and had 7 strikeouts. ROYALS 4-5, RED SOX 2-4 Lorenzo Cain drew a walk with two outs and the bases loaded in the 10th inning to give Kansas City a 5-4 victory over host Boston and complete the Royals’ sweep of a day-night doubleheader. Ervin Santana (2-1) pitched seven strong innings in the opener, when Kansas City won 4-2. Kelvin Herrera (2-2) got the victory in the night game.

TWINS 5, WHITE SOX 3 Josh Willingham had a tie breaking three-run double in Minnesota’s four-run seventh inning, leading the visiting Twins past the slumping Chicago White Sox. Aaron Hicks singled in a run and Justin Morneau had a bases-loaded walk as Minnesota swept a pair of weekend games against Chicago to stretch its winning streak to four.

INDIANS 5, ASTROS 4 Mark Reynolds’ seventh home run of the season put Cleveland on top in the seventh inning and the Indians held on against the host Houston Astros.

RANGERS 11, MARINERS 3 Nelson Cruz hit his fifth career grand slam, one of four home runs by the host Texas Rangers on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep over the Seattle Mariners. Leonys Martin, Mitch Moreland and Adrian Beltre also homered for the Rangers.

ANGELS 4, TIGERS 3 Mark Trumbo homered leading the bottom of the 13th inning and Albert Pujols doubled home two runs, leading the Los Angeles Angels past visiting Detroit on Sunday for their second consecutive series sweep of the Tigers. Phil Coke (0-2) intentionally walked Pujols with two outs and the bases empty in the 12th before striking out Josh Hamilton on three pitches. But Trumbo drove a 3-1 pitch into the top part of the two-tiered bullpen in left field for his second home run of the season.

INTERLEAGUE

DODGERS 7, ORIOLES 4 Mark Ellis drove in three runs, and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers beat erratic Jake Arrieta and the Baltimore Orioles to snap a six-game losing streak.
