Hurt QB ahead of schedule

Charleston sophomore quarterback Ty Storey is “way ahead of schedule” after surgery in late November to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Coach Greg Kendrick said Friday afternoon.

Kendrick said Storey’s knee tested “88 percent” during a Wednesday therapy session.

“He’s able to do anything and everything we’ve ever asked him to do,” Kendrick said. “I looked out one day and he’s pushing a sled. He doesn’t know the concept of slowing down.”

Storey, 6-3, 217 pounds, was the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette co-Sophomore Offensive Player of the Year after shattering every passing record at the Class 3A school.

Storey, who played much of last season with an injured knee, completed 328 of 503 passes for 4,397 yards and 46 touchdowns.

He is expected to be highly recruited as a senior.

Kendrick said Storey threw full-scale passing sessions last week for Arkansas offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.

Charleston begins spring practice May 6, and Storey will have limited contact, Kendrick said.

The Tigers are scheduled to play three 7-on-7 tournaments this summer, hosting an inaugural event June 15 before traveling to Fountain Lake (July 6) and Shiloh Christian (July 12-13).

“He’ll be full-tilt,” Kendrick said, referring to Storey.

LITTLE ROCK CATHOLIC Seeking stability

Roy Davis coached Little Rock Catholic from 1978-1999, a 22-season stint highlighted by state championships in 1984 and 1985.

Catholic’s football program - at the top - hasn’t been nearly as stable the past decade.

John Fogleman will be the school’s fourth coach since Davis retired from coaching following the 1999 season.

Fogleman, 44, was announced as Catholic’s new coach Thursday morning to replace David Estes, who resigned last month after three seasons.

Estes was promoted from defensive coordinator after Ellis “Scooter” Register left in December 2009 to coach Little Rock Central.

Catholic had tapped longtime defensive coordinator Doug Pilcher to replace Davis.

Pilcher coached the Rockets for three seasons before being replaced by Register in 2003.

“We’re hoping that John Fogleman will stay with us throughout his career, and that it’s going to be a mutually beneficial relationship,” Catholic Principal Steve Straessle said. “We’re looking for great things.”

Fogleman, originally from Little Rock, spent the past six seasons as head coach at Malvern, where he led the Class 4A Leopards to a 43-29 record and five consecutive playoff appearances.

Straessle said Estes resigned to spend more time with his family.

The Class 7A Rockets were 10-21 under Estes.
