Bomb-like device pulled from river

The Washington County sheriff’s office have sent off a suspected “homemade explosive device” a man found in the Illinois River, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

About 12:40 p.m., a man looking for fish in the river spotted a suspicious item near Kettle Springs Road and called the sheriff ’s off ice, spokesman Kelly Cantrell said. After deputies checked out the item, they notified the Bentonville bomb squad.

Bomb-squad officers “rendered [the device] safe” and sent it off for forensic analysis, Cantrell said.

Sheriff ’s officials declined to release additional details about the device as they continued their investigation on Saturday night.
