Woman, 69, hurt in drive-by attack

A 69-year-old Fort Smith woman received minor injuries to her eye during what police described as a driveby shooting early Thursday in the 1400 block of Belle Avenue.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., police were called to 1425 Belle to investigate a call that shots had been fired in the area. A witness said a small, dark-colored four-door passenger car stopped in the street in front of the house, and the driver fired five to seven shots. The driver, a black man, and a passenger, also black, then sped north on Belle Avenue, according to release issued by Fort Smith police spokesman Sgt. Daniel Grubbs.

The owner of the home, David Jones, 72, told officers that he believed the shooting was a result of an ongoing dispute between the men in the vehicle and Jones’ juvenile grandson. Jones’ wife, Doris, reported a minor injury to her right eye, likely caused by debris when the bullets went through the front of the house. Four “suspected” bullet holes were found near a bedroom window, but no shell casings were found, Grubbs said.

The injured woman was treated by emergency medical personnel on the scene.
