LR officer relieved of duty after fight in Fayetteville

A Little Rock police officer and a Prairie Grove detective were relieved of duty after an altercation in Fayetteville, their departments confirmed Monday.

Little Rock police spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said in an e-mail that officer Jeffery Harris was in a physical altercation during which he displayed a handgun.

Harris, who was hired in November 2011, was relieved of duty pending investigation by the Little Rock Police Department's internal affairs unit, Davis said. Davis declined to release Harris' personnel record.

Fayetteville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Craig Stout said officers responded to Billy's Pool Hall at 989 S. Razorback Road about 11:58 p.m. Friday after receiving calls about two armed men in the restaurant.

Stout said the armed men were Harris and another off-duty officer from Prairie Grove in Northwest Arkansas.

Praire Grove Police Chief Carl Dorman said Detective Rex Frederick was placed on administrative leave after Friday's altercation.

Frederick was hired about two years ago to take part in the Fourth Judicial Task Force.

Dorman said he's waiting for the Fayetteville Police Department to finish its criminal investigation before conducting an internal investigation on Frederick.

Stout said that at one point, one of the men felt threatened and pulled his weapon but could not confirm which of the off-duty officers it was.

No arrests were made, because the establishment is considered a restaurant, Stout said.

Stout said concealed weapon laws in Arkansas prohibit carrying weapons into establishments that sell alcohol, unless it is considered a restaurant.

Fayetteville police have interviewed several witnesses, and Stout said the process is ongoing.

Little Rock police is working in cooperation with Fayetteville police on the investigation.

Correction: A previous version of this story misstated the status of Harris's employment with the Little Rock Police Department. The error has been corrected.
