Big week for Arkansas legislators as wrap-up near

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas legislators have given themselves until Friday to wrap up work for this year's session, and the House and Senate still have to reach decisions on expanding Medicaid, cutting taxes and $125 million in state financing for a proposed steel mill.

Legislators are expected to vote Monday on whether to help finance the proposed $1.1 billion Big River Steel mill in Osceola.

Also ahead is a decision on whether to opt to offer health insurance coverage to an additional 250,000 Arkansans through the Medicaid program. Legislators are approaching the private insurance option as an alternative to health coverage expansion in the federal health overhaul.

Legislators are also looking at a package of $100 million in tax cuts, including a proposal to cut the state sales tax on groceries.
