Three Injured In Parking Lot Accident

BENTONVILLE — Three people were taken to Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville after a accident in the parking lot of the Bentonville Walmart Supercenter on North Walton Boulevard.

Tim Spellich said he and his wife were in their vehicle when he heard and felt a loud bang. Spellich said he then saw a pickup go down the row of cars and hit five to six other vehicles.

The vehicle struck a man who was walking in the parking lot, Spellich said. The vehicle continued until it went over an embankment and a fence stopped it, Spellich said.

Sgt. Travis Scantling of the Bentonville Police Department said the driver of the pickup suffered a medical-related episode and hit the other vehicles and a man in the parking lot.

Scantling said the pickup hit seven vehicles.

Spellich said he and others went try to help the person struck by the pickup. “It really wouldn’t have been a big deal had it not been for the injuries,” Spellich said.

Spellich said he was told officials believe the person driving the pickup had a seizure.

A woman was in one of the vehicles hit and was injured, according to Scantling. All three were taken to the Bentonville hospital, he said. He didn’t know the medical condition of any of the three.

Spellich’s car was parked in a handicapped spot near the store entrance.

Bentonville police blocked of a portion of the parking lot off as they investigated the accident.

One officer was seen taking measurements of the scene.

Those parked in that portion of the lot couldn’t move their vehicles. A Walmart employee took those waiting in McDonald’s and provided them food as they waited for police to release the vehicles.

No other information was available at press time.
