Western Am tickets go on sale Monday

Tickets for the 2013 Western Amateur Championship go on sale Monday through the tournament’s website.

The 111th Western Amateur will be played July 29-Aug. 4 at The Alotian Club in Roland.

Weekly badges for the tournament may be purchased online beginning at 9 a.m. Monday atthewesternamateur.com. A limited number of transferable badges will be available for $100.

Founded in 1899, the Western Amateur Championship is one of the most prestigious national tournaments. Its 156-man field ranks consistently among the top three in the world along with the British Amateur and the U.S. Amateur. Past Western Amateur champions include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw and Curtis Strange.

The field will play 18 holes of individual stroke play the first two days, then it will be cut to the low 44 scores and ties. The remaining golfers will play 18 holes each on Thursday and Friday to determine the low 16 finishers, who will compete in match play Saturday and Sunday to decide a champion.

SOFTBALL Razorbacks down No. 8 Missouri

Chloe Oprzedek had a two-run double in the 11th inning to help lift Arkansas to a 4-1 victory over No. 8 Missouri (24-5, 9-4 SEC) on Saturday in Columbia, Mo.

It was also Arkansas’ first victory over a Top 10 SEC team on the road since April, 2010.

Oprzedek’s double scored Devon Wallace and Stephanie Canfield to break a 1-1 tie. Oprzedek advanced to third on the play as the Missouri outfield misplayed the hit. Clarisa Navarro followed with a sacrifice fly for the winning margin.

Arkansas (27-16, 5-9) was led by sophomore pitcher Kimmy Beasley who allowed 1 run and 3 hits while striking out 12.

BASEBALL Rhodes downs Hendrix

Hendrix College lost 3-2 to Rhodes College in Southern Athletic Association play Saturday at Warrior Field .

The Warriors fell to 16-18 overall and 7-9 in SAA play, while the Lynx improved to 18-16 and 9-8.

Rhodes left-handed starter Blake Glauben (3-3) earned the victory, going 62/3 innings and allowing 4 hits, 2 runs and 2 walks while striking out 2.

Sophomore Nick Land (3-3) took the loss for Hendrix, giving up 7 hits, 3 runs and 3 walks while striking out 1 in 3 1/3 innings. Freshman Kyle Teachout threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk to go with 2 strikeouts.
