The Drennen-Scott Historic Site, 221 N. Third St. in Van Buren, is seeking volunteers to participate in archeological excavations this month.

The site, operated by the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, serves as both a museum and a teaching classroom and lab. Volunteers are needed to work three-hour shifts between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday as well as April 17-19 and April 24-28.

Volunteers must reserve a day and time to work. No experience is necessary, but space is limited.

Children 10 and older can also volunteer, but kids 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

The work will be a continuation of excavation work started by UA Fort Smith students participating in the Introduction to Archeology class.

Mary Alice Hill, the first director of women’s athletics on the college level, will be keynote speaker for the Women’s Leadership Summit, set for Thursday and Friday at the Fayetteville Town Center and the Chancellor Hotel.

The conference is sponsored by the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions and the Fayetteville Visitors Bureau. Hill will also offer a free, public lecture at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building.

Hill became the director of women’s athletics for Colorado State University in 1972, the same year Congress passed Title IX.
