Panthers Find Positives In Loss

— Starting for the second consecutive week and playing the entire game, sophomore quarterback Chris Lampton got a lot of valuable experience Friday in Siloam Springs’ 56-0 loss at Bentonville.

He played every snap at quarterback and showed flashes of what made him successful the last two years in quarterbacking the eighth- and ninth-grade football teams at Siloam Springs.

That Figures

13 — Season-high 13 penalties for Siloam Springs for 101 yards

28 — Passes and 28 rushes in 56 total offensive plays for the Panthers

97 — Rushing yards from Bentonville’s Tearris Wallace to set the 7A/6A-West rushing record Friday against Siloam Springs

Lampton finished the night completing 12 of 28 passes for 139 yards while rushing for 46 yards on 10 carries. His rushing totals would have been even more had it not been for a pair of sacks by the Bentonville defense, which cost him 16 yards. Lampton did throw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

“I thought Chris did a really good job for us,” said Bryan Ross, Panthers coach. “He made a bad throw on that pick that they ran back, but outside of that, I think he played a really good game for a sophomore. I’m proud of him ... valuable experience for him down the line.”

Play of the Night: Senior receiver Mario Flores took one of the biggest hits of the season early in the fourth quarter, but it didn’t prevent him from hauling in a 15-yard reception. Flores hauled in an inside pass from sophomore Chris Lampton and took a bone-jarring hit from Bentonville defenders. Flores held onto the ball, which gave Siloam Springs a first down.

Injury Update: Senior offensive tackle Austin Farmer left the game against Bentonville when he aggravated a shoulder injury. Ross said Farmer should be OK to play this week.

Player of the Game: Senior running back Scout Alexander had 112 yards of total offense, which might have been the toughest of his career. Bentonville’s defense swarmed Alexander most of the night, throwing him for losses on five of his 18 carries, and he had 35 yards rushing. However, he also had three catches for 77 yards, including a pair of screen passes that went for 41 yards and 21 yards.

Notable: As if playing top-ranked Bentonville wasn’t difficult enough, the Panthers didn’t make things any easier on themselves by committing a season-high 13 penalties for 101 yards.

The Lingo: “As always, they’re well-coached. I think their coaches do a great job of coaching their kids hard.”
