Grants available to fight obesity

— Arkansas schools and other community-based nonprofit organizations in the state can apply for grants of up to $1,000 to create programs that help fight childhood obesity.

Under the program, students develop the proposals with help from educators and youth leaders. The proposals must include an element where children can count their steps, such as walking, running or hiking, as well as a service component that provides direct service, enables advocacy on behalf of a cause or features youth philanthropy.

The initiative is organized by Youth Service America, an organization that helps students participate in service projects and develop leadership skills, and the United Healthcare insurance company.

Each accepted project will begin on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Jan. 21, and end on Global Youth Service Day, April 26-28.

The application deadline is 11 p.m. Oct. 14. Grant recipients will be notified in November.

More information, including the grant application, is available at YSA.org/HEROES.
