Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission sets events for October

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission has sanctioned several lectures, exhibits and other events during October as part of the state’s continuing observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Henderson State University in Arkadelphia will host “Southern Women and the Civil War,” a lecture by history professor Angela Boswell, on Thursday.

Frontier Days will be held Friday and Saturday in Paris and feature re-enactors and the dedication of a Civil War Sesquicentennial historic marker for the skirmish at Haguewood Prairie.

A Grand Prairie Civil War Roundtable will feature Tom Ezell and a presentation on Masons in the Civil War at the Lonoke County Museum in Lonoke on Oct. 9.

Hoo-Rah Days will be held Oct. 12 and 13 in De Queenand will feature historians, artillery demonstrations and other events.

“Invasion or Liberation? The Civil War in Arkansas,” an exhibit by the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, will end Oct. 27. It may be viewed at the Arkansas Studies Institute in downtown Little Rock.

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission is part of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.
