School Board Honors Maintenance Director

— David Tate, director of physical plant services, was recognized for his can-do work ethic Thursday by the School Board.

Tate, who has worked for the district since 1982, received the Superintendent’s Honor Roll award.

“For three decades, he has worked in every building we have from the floors to the attics, making sure we have the best possible conditions for students and staff,” said Vicki Thomas, superintendent. “From meetings, to inspections, to site visits, to evaluations, he always has a ready smile and a ‘Yes, we can do that’ attitude.”

Steve Percival, board member, said Tate has never learned to say “no” or “I can’t.” An audience of about 30 patrons and district employees gave him a standing ovation.

Tate, 52, has worked closely with the Nabholz Construction management team during the first phase of the Fayetteville High School transformation.

“In the role of (representing the) project owner, David is one of the best, if not the best, public school facility directors that we work with,” said Phil Jones, Nabholz project executive. “I think one of David’s greatest strengths is that he is always ready to roll up his sleeves and assist with the development of a method to tackle the challenges that invariably occur during any construction project.”

The Superintendent’s Honor Roll award is the highest district recognition given to employees or patrons.

Tate’s reaction was simple.

“The job is easy when you have a great staff,” he said.
