Russellville QBs take down Northside

— Cody Jones made the most of his time at quarterback on his birthday Friday night.

Russellville’s junior quarterback competed 7 of 9 passes for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns to help lead the Cyclones past Fort Smith Northside 40-19 in a 7A/6A-Central game at Mayo-Thompson Stadium.

Not a bad way to celebrate your birthday.

Jones, who alternates series with Mitch Mullen, made big plays early in the first half by connecting on touchdown passes of 73 and 38 yards and added another 9-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Mullen, who finished 9 of 16 with 137 yards and 1 touchdown, made a big play to help secure the victory when he found Co-Chese Temple-Laws for a 62-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

“They played well,” Russellville Coach Jeff Holt said. “That’s why we play them both. They avoid the bad mistakes and I never have to worry about who is in. What a great birthday present for Jones.”

Jones connected with Temple-Laws for a 38-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead with 7:22 left in the first quarter.

Russellville wide receiver Jalen Curtis, who caught 9 passes for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns, beat his man on a double move for a 22-yard catch to help set up a score.

Kentrel Scott then scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 15-0 after a two-point conversion.

Northside (0-5, 0-2) responded on its next drive with a 4-yard touchdown run from quarterback Gray Stanton that cut the lead to 15-6.
