Morrilton runs over Alma

— Morrilton’s one two punch of running back Jamar Criswell and quarterback Toney Hawkins was far too much for Alma to handle Friday.

Criswell and Hawkins had a combined 345 of the Devil Dogs’ 418 rushing yards to give Morrilton a 35-7 victory over Alma at Airedale Stadium.

The Devil Dogs (3-1, 2-0 5A-West) trailed 7-0 after one quarter but held Alma (3-2, 1-1) to just one first down over the next two quarters.

Criswell rushed for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns on 22 carries, and Hawkins ran for 159 yards and 1 touchdown on 27 attempts.

“We just kept running it, and our kids up front did a great job,” Morrilton Coach Cody McNabb said. “We’ve got some guys that are tough to tackle, and they hit some creases.”

The Devil Dogs sacked Alma quarterback Gage Jensen six times and held the Airedales to 37 yards rushing on 25 carries.

“It’s not one thing,” McNabb said. “It’s a lot of guys doing their job.”

Alma drove 54 yards to the Morrilton 3 on its first possession, but a sack by Anfernee Foster pushed the Airedales back to the 10 and they came away empty as Laquanta Canady blocked Seth Linker’s 27-yard field goal attempt.

“We didn’t score in that first series,” Alma Coach Todd Dilbeck said. “We got down to the 3 and didn’t get it in, so that was a big momentum swing.”

The Airedales did manage to score the game’s first points on their next drive when Jensen hit Gage Battles for a 5-yard touchdown pass, but Morrilton took control in the second quarter. Criswell tied the game on a 3-yard run and broke right for a 36-yard touchdown run to put the Devil Dogs ahead 14-7 with 4:44 left in the half.

The Devil Dogs missed a chance to extend their lead when Jorge Rivero missed a 26-yard field-goal attempt with 43 seconds remaining in the half, but Morrilton shut out Alma in the second half, adding three touchdowns on runs by Criswell, Hawkins and junior Sharaz Rhodes.

“Everybody has got to play and do their part,” Dilbeck said. “Tonight we didn’t play really well on both sides of the ball.”
