Bruins coast after leading 36-0 at half

— Pulaski Academy (3-2, 2-0) piled up 36 points while scoring on all but one possession in the first half on their way to a 43-8 victory over the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (1-4, 0-2) at Cad Polk Stadium.

The Bruins took the opening possession of the 5A-Central game 65 yards on 10 plays, with Jairus Porter scoring on a 17-yard touchdown run. Wilson Tharp passed to Kyle Whelpley for the two-point conversion to make the score8-0 with 9:54 left in the first quarter.

Helena-West Helena turned the ball over on downs, and the Bruins scored again when quarterback Lawson Vassar hit Hunter Henry from 1-yard out with 6:23 to go in the first quarter. George Friedmann kicked the extra point to put PA ahead 15-0.

The Bruins needed 19 seconds to score again. Whelpley stripped the ball from the Cougars, and Vassar hit Jalen Seals for a 31-yard touchdown pass. Friedmann’s extra point made the score 22-0 with 6:04 to go.

Pulaski Academy made it 29-0 with 27.4 seconds to play in the opening quarter. The Bruins drove 97 yards in 12 plays, with Vassar completing an 8-yard touchdown pass Daniel Vogel. Friedmann made the extra point.

An interception on the Cougars’ next possession set up another Bruins’ touchdown. Vassar hit L.J. Wallace for a 6-yard touchdown pass to complete a four-play, 65-yard drive. Friedmann kicked the extra point to make it 36-0 with 7:27 to go in the first half.

Each team scored once in the second with the running-clock rule in effect. Helena-West Helena took the first possession of the second half 69 yards on six plays. Keith Hays scored on a 36-yard touchdown run with 8:16 to go in the third. Delane Bedford ran in the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 36-8.

The Bruins completed the scoring with Will Hefley’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Will Hastings to cap off a 7-play, 66-yard drive. Hastings kicked the extra point to make the final score, 43-8.
