ROGERS — Rogers Heritage finished Thursday night's game against the Southwest Cougars the way they started it, with a touchdown pass from Jake Qualls to Collin Christian.

The duo combined for 111 yards in the air and two touchdowns as they helped the War Eagles (1-4) to their first victory of the season.

“For a freshman team, that is a pretty good combination.” Heritage coach Aaron Ledbetter said. “They both work extremely hard and have learned the offense very well.”

Down 20-14 late in the fourth quarter, the Heritage defense forced a fumble and recovered it on the Cougars’ 31 to give the War Eagles one last shot on offense. Qualls connected with Christian twice on the five-play drive, ending it with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes, 16 seconds left.

Qualls also connected with Christian on his first pass of the game on a 72-yard strike and a a Garret Sheetz short touchdown run gave the War Eagles a 14-0 lead.

But the Cougars came roaring back. Led by eighth grade quarterback Trey Smith, Southwest put up 20 unanswered points to grab the late 20-14 lead. Smith lead the Cougars with 135 total yards and three total touchdowns — two rushing and one passing.

Oakdale defeated Southwest in the eighth-grade game, 14-7.
