BENEFITS WITH FRIENDS: ‘A Night at the Speakeasy’ to boost books

— A visit to the Roaring ’20s on Oct. 5 will put books in the hands of area second-graders. This year, the Junior Auxiliary of Rogers-Bentonville is marking its 35-year partnership with Reading Is Fundamental with A Night at the Speakeasy fundraiser.

Organizers encourage guests to dress in keeping with the theme: “Come as a flapper or silent screen star! Come as a mobster or come as you are!”

Through Reading Is Fundamental, the volunteer and service organization provides books three times each school year to secondgraders in 14 elementary schools in Benton County. Schools served by the group have 40 percent or more of their students receiving free or reduced lunches.

Reading Is Fundamental is the largest children’s literacy nonprofit organization in the United States. According to its website, nearly twothirds of low-income families in the United States own no books.
