Fort Smith joins Smart911 system

— Fort Smith police have announced a new information system designed to improve emergency response to calls from cell phone users.

The Smart911 system allows city residents to go online and create a profile of information about themselves that emergency workers can access when needed, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

The release said “9-1-1 calls received from a cellular phone merely provide the phone number, wireless carrier and an approximate location of the caller.” The system allows cell-phone users to create a profile online that automatically provides phone numbers, names, addresses and additional needed information to dispatchers.

The vendor for the service is Rave Mobile Safety, which the police department release said is used by state and local agencies and colleges and universities.

To create a Smart911 profile, Fort Smith residents can visit smart911.com online, according to the news release. For questions, they can visit the company’s website at ravemobilesafety.com.
