— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 26, 1912

Little activity was noticeable yesterday in the “dog catching” department. One reason was the weather and the other the waterways convention. The lone hound who remained behind when the “jail delivery” took place Monday lent a mournful accompaniment to the cheers for Eugene V. Debs Tuesday night, and it was feared an addition to the course might interfere with the convention proceedings. City Attorney Harry Hale yesterday denied that he had anything to do with the escape of the canines, but referred to the silence of Fred Isgrig, secretary to the mayor, as being suspicious - he made no direct charge, however.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 26, 1962

An individual may possess as much as one gallon of liquor and up to three gallons of beer for his own use in a dry county, the attorney general’s office ruled today. But, the opinion said, it would be a violation of the law to have in an automobile at the same time any combination of alcoholic beverages which exceeds one gallon. The opinion went to Monticello Police Chief Harry Allison.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 26, 1987

Little Rock teachers began a strike at dawn Friday, closing schools to 26,385 students and promising to stay off the job until they get an acceptable pay raise. Hours later, school district officials responded with a vow to fight the strike in court and force 1,800 teachers back to their jobs by Monday. The state’s first teachers’ strike went into effect about 5 a.m. after a fruitless, all-night bargaining session between negotiators for the school district and the Little Rock Classroom Teachers Association.

Among the 50 states, Arkansas is one of the worst in requiring state political parties to fully disclose contributions and spending, a money-in-politics watchdog group said Wednesday. The Natural State scored 44 points out of a potential 100, ranking it seventh from the bottom and netting a failing grade under the criteria set by the Center for Public Integrity, which reviewed disclosure laws in all states. Twenty-three other states also received failing grades.
