Fayetteville’s Title Streak Ends At Seven

Conway Takes Top Spot In Class 7A

The streak is over.

Fayetteville’s run of seven consecutive girls high school golf state championships came to an end Tuesday, as host Conway won the Class 7A tournament in convincing fashion at Conway Country Club.

The Lady Wampus Cats, led by senior Summar Roachell, scored a three-player total of 244 for the second day in a row over 18 holes for tournament score of 488. Roachell, an Arkansas commit, won medalist honors at the 7A event for a fourth consecutive year with a one-over par 141 for the tournament, including a 1-under 69 in Tuesday’s final round.

Fayetteville, which had won eight of the last nine titles in the state’s highest classification and every title since 2004, finished second with a team total of 526.

Sophomore Anna Grace Lavy finished second overall in the tournament with a 154 total, shooting 77 on both days.

After Alison Head and McKenzie Kley rounded out Fayetteville’s scoring on Monday, it was Head, with a 92, and Reagan Gates with a 94 who completed the Lady Bulldogs’ final round total of 263 on Tuesday.

“I hoped to make a little bit more of a move on them to give ourselves a chance, and we tried to,” Fayetteville coach Scott Williams said. “But Conway is just a very good team this year.”

Conway finished second to Fayetteville at last year’s 7A Tournament, but had no intentions of anything other than the crown this year. Along with Roachell, freshmen Alexis McDaniel and Logan Tollivar rounded out the Lady Wampus Cats’ scoring with totals of 171 and 176, respectively.

“The girls are down right now, but like I told them, they are part of a one-of-a-kind deal,” Williams said. “I did some research and every year since 1999 this team has finished as state champs or runner-up. And now these girls are a part of carrying on and building that tradition.

“I know they’re disappointed in the way they played, but the good news is they will all be back next year.”

Fort Smith Southside followed Fayetteville in third and Bryant finished fourth.

Bentonville bounced back from an opening round 296 to card a team score of 280 on Tuesday, led by all-state selection Hannah Brauburger, to finish fifth.

Rogers High finished in sixth with a two-day total of 585. Junior Abbie Parker led the Lady Mounties on Tuesday with a 94, followed by Taylor Erickson with a 95 and Morgan Conway with a 103.

“We have three girls coming back, and that experience will be helpful,” Lady Mounties coach Brenda Alexander said. “They see that they have areas to work on. I think we will do better next year.”

Roachell, Lavy and Taylor Loeb of Mount St. Mary’s will advance as individual players to the overall state golf tournament, to be held Oct. 11 at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock.
