Deeply stung by the release of a video showing Mitt Romney talking insultingly about poor people to rich people, Republicans could only try to forge a stalemate of symmetrical affronts. They deployed the old defense of “hey, the other guy is as bad as I am,” which is believed to have derived from grade school playgrounds.
