Pianist at ASU to play hits of ‘Piano Men’ Joel and John

— Pianist Jim Witter brings his “Piano Men” tribute to Billy Joel and Elton John back to Arkansas this week with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Arkansas State University’s Fowler Center,201 Olympic Drive, Jonesboro.

The first half of Witter’s program focuses on Joel hits, including “Movin’ Out,” “My Life,”“Just the Way You Are” and “Only the Good Die Young”; the second half concentrates primarily on John, including “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” “Candle in the Wind” and “Philadelphia Freedom,” plus a selection of TV theme songs from the ’70s (Witter and the band will take requests).

The concert kicks off the university’s 2012-13 Fowler Center Series. Tickets are $30 and $20, $23 and $15 for senior citizens and students, with discounts for ASU faculty, staff and students (with a current ID). Gunn show

Stylist Tim Gunn, of Lifetime’s Project Runway and the chief creative officer at Fifth & Pacific (formerly Liz Claiborne Inc.), will open the University of Central Arkansas Public Appearances season with “An Evening With Tim Gunn,” 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall at UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

The Log Cabin Democrat is sponsoring the lecture, which will focus on Gunn’s life, career and new book, Tim Gunn’s Fashion Bible: The Fascinating History of Everything in Your Closet. Copies will be for sale in the lobby and Gunn will sign them after the lecture in the adjoining Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center.

Legendary Pacers

Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Vada Sheid Community Development Center, Arkansas State University-Mountain Home, 1600 S. College St., Mountain Home.

UCA ‘cathedral’

The Mirazozo luminarium, an inflatable, building-size “sculptural environment” created by Architects of Air, a design firm based in Nottingham, England, will be up Thursday-Saturday at the University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway, near the entrance to Alumni Circle, directly in front of McAlister Hall.

The design, based on Gothic cathedrals and Islamic architecture, features a maze of colorful winding paths and domes. It is the first such installation in Arkansas.

Hours are noon-6 p.m. Thursday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Entry is free, by timed ticket, which must be reserved in advance via the website of the university’s Baum Gallery of Fine Art, uca.edu/art/baum. The installation is in conjunction with Conway’s annual ArtsFest.

Monday bluegrass

Tommy Brown and County Line Grass will perform at 7 p.m. Monday at the Collins Theatre, 120 W. Emerson St., Paragould, part of Jonesboro public radio station KASUFM, 91.9’s Bluegrass Monday series.

Doors open at 6. The station will pass the hat to pay the musicians; suggested donation is $5. Call (870) 972-2367.
