— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1912 ARKANSAS CITY - The big new mill of the Grayling Lumber Company, which has been under construction here for the past eight months, yesterday was put into operation. Practically everything is now in readiness and the mill will be kept running steady. The capacity of the two large bands is 50,000 on a 10-hour basis. The old Desha railroad has been acquired and the company will do its logging over this railroad, in addition to using the tracks of the Iron Mountain.

Maj. Homer Berry has a contract with the Arkansas Livestock Exposition to prevent rain over the showgrounds during the annual livestock show Oct. 1-6, Sen. Clyde Byrd, show director, announced yesterday. In a joint press conference, Berry and Byrd said that the retired Air Force major will have two “generators” in operation. The elderly and handicapped of Central Arkansasrecently received a jewel of a gift from the city of North Little Rock. Emerald Park, 135 acres of woods and hills which will be laced with a half-mile of paved walking trails when completed, was opened Thursday by city and National Park Service officials. The park will offer patrons two overlooks of the Arkansas River Valley, about a half-mile of 12-foot-wide walking trail, four benches, and a parking lot - all accessible to the handicapped.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 2002 CROSSETT - Librarians across Arkansas complain of dwindling attendance and shrinking budgets, but the librarians at the new Crossett Public Library don’t have those problems. Hundreds of library fans crowded between the stacks of books and computer carrels Sunday to celebrate the dedication of the $4 million building. “I think it’s gorgeous and wonderful,” Crossett Book Club member Marian Moore said as she took in the rows of thin-screen computers and the three skylight towers that allow the sun to pour in. The new library easily beats the old location at a post office building downtown, Moore said.
