Notes

— AGFC night Sept. 29 at I-30 Speedway

Arkansas Game and Fish Night at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock will be held on Saturday. The special event will raise funds for boating safety education work in the state.

From each adult paid admission, speedway officials will donate $1 to the boating safety program of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in memory of the late sprint car driver Carl Dean Farish. Farish was killed in a boating accident in 1998.

Fans are welcomed to come early to see wildlife exhibits, demonstrations and other displays. Adults wearing any article of camouflage clothing will get $1 off the regular admission price.

A special race will match several local TV and radio personalities.

Gates will open at 5 p.m., and races will start at 7:30 p.m.

I-30 Speedway is at Exit 126 off Interstate 30. For more information, contact Steve Wilson at (501) 223-6408 or the speedway at (501) 455-4567.

Openings at AGFC expo still available

There are still several openings for this year’s Youth Outdoor Expo for parents, teachers and fifth-grade students.

A few more classes can be accepted Oct. 30 and there’s room remaining Oct. 31 for the all-day expo. Registration is on a first-come, firstserved basis so interested teachers need to act quickly. This will be the sixth expo, and it has filled up each year.

This Arkansas Game and Fish Commission event at Lake Sylvia Recreation Area can accommodate 1,000 fifth-graders each day. Most classes come from Conway, Faulkner, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline and Yellcounties to learn about nature and outdoor activities. Students from any school are welcome, although signin begins at 8:45 each day, which makes travel time a problem for schools at great distances

Students begin at 9 a.m. and spend 45 minutes at each of three stations before having lunch. Three more stations are visited during the afternoon, each manned by experts from the AGFC or volunteers.

Lake Sylvia is a USDA Forest Service site in the Ouachita National Forest about 30 miles west of Little Rock. Students will be able to try their hand at archery with compound bows, fishing with cane poles and firing BB guns. They’ll also learn about Arkansas wildlife and fish, boating safety, the AGFC dive team, deer stand safety, the Hooked on Fishing/Not on Drugs program, how wildlife officers use decoys to catch poachers and other conservation and outdoors information.
