Cabot GI killed in Afghan attack

A U.S. Army soldier from Cabot died Thursday from injuries he suffered in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Friday evening.

Sgt. Jason M. Swindle, 24, died in Panjwa’l, Afghanistan, after he was injured “when he encountered enemy smallarms fire,” the Defense Department said in a news release.

Swindle was assigned to 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Ga., the release said.

Swindle joined the Army in July 2005 and had four deployments. He posthumously received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.

One hundred servicemen with Arkansas ties have died in the United States’ war in Iraq and Afghanistan - 72 in Iraq and 28 in Afghanistan. Eighty-one deaths resulted from enemy fire, 18 occurred as a result of noncombat situations and one was due to friendly fire.
