Panthers Devour Elks

— Yellville-Summit's coach Calvin Mallett didn't know what kind of performance to expect from his Panthers on Friday Night.

The Panthers (2-2) were coming into the game against Elkins (0-4) having lost their last two games by a combined seven points, and were without their starting quarterback.

Not a problem.

Yellville-Summit scored 21 points in the second quarter on its way to a 42-6 beating of the injury-riddled Elks, who were without their starting quarterback Mitchell Clark and starting running back Michael Kethcer.

Why the Panthers won

Yellville-Summit dominated on both sides of the ball, scoring 21 points in the second quarter and only giving up 124 yards on defense.

Why the Elks lost

Too many injuries. Starting quarterback Mitchell Clark did not play along with starting running back Michael Ketcher and the Elks could not do anything on offense to overcome the injuries.

The Panthers’ offensive explosion was highlighted by running back Seth Morgan, who had 15 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

“His toughness was good,” Mallett said. “Now he has been sick, and I was worried about his stamina, but he could have had even more had some of those runs not got called back.”

Sophomore quarterback Christain Campbell made his first start of the season and took advantage of his opportunities. Campbell threw his first pass of the game with 20 seconds left in the second quarter and completed a 55-yard touchdown strike to Chris Sheehy giving Yellville the 28-0 halftime lead.

Yellville's defense got it on the board to start the game when Gabe Dickson intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. The Panthers forced two interceptions, had five sacks, and blocked two punts. They held the Elks to 124 yards of total offense, 73 of which, came on the last two plays when Elkins' Nick Harris took off for a 66 yard run and followed it up with a seven-yard touchdown run to put the Elks on the scoreboard with 19 seconds remaining in the game.
