— 50 YEARS AGO Sept. 22, 1962 JONESBORO - E.C. Barton gave himself a birthday party yesterday, but his guests received the gifts. Barton, a Jonesboro lumberman, was celebrating his 80th birthday. His 35 guests ranged in ages from 80 to 97. All were distinguished by the fact that they were born and reared in Craighead County. They gathered at the Milner-Noble Hotel in Jonesboro to dine and reminisce and Barton gave each of them a $10 birthday gift. Barton said he had received presents on each of his 80 birthdays and this time wanted to give to someone else. Barton is president of the E.C. Barton Co. at Jonesboro and owns 27 lumberyards and building supply companies in Arkansas and southeast Missouri.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 22, 1987

U.S. District Judge Henry Woods defended his handling of the Pulaski County school desegregation case Monday, saying there was no reason why he should “sit idly by” while his desegregation orders were violated. Woods, represented by Little Rock attorney William R. Wilson Jr., made those comments in a 21-page briefsent to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at St. Louis. Woods was responding to efforts by the Little Rock School District to force him to step down from the desegregation case.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 22, 2002 WARREN - Warren Mayor Gregg Reep has issued an order prohibiting police officers from driving more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit. The order comes after a Bradley County deputy sheriff and two young Warren residents were involved in an accident near Warren Junior High School.Investigators said Bradley County Deputy Sheriff Mark Spencer was responding to a call for assistance from the Warren Police Department when he collided with a vehicle driven by Drew Robinson of Warren, causing both vehicles to flip. No one was seriously injured. Authorities said Spencer was exceeding the speed limit when the accident occurred, but added that he had his lights and siren on. While the accident was the motivation for the mayor’s administrative order, he acknowledged receiving prior complaints that city officers drive too fast.
