— Houston Angel tossed a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes and Little Rock Christian rolled Sylvan Hills 28-0 in its 5A-Central opener Friday night.

Angel, a junior quarterback, hit Connor Vaughn with a 36-yard scoring pass with 4:48 left in the half and connected with tight end Will Duncan on a 3-yard score with 24 second left and the Warriors (2-1, 1-0) cruised through the second half.

“Our plan all week was the throw it on them,” Little Rock Christian Coach Justin Kramer said. “They bunch it in the there so tight in the box we wanted to try and throw it.”

Both teams missed field goals in the first half before the Warriors cashed in on a 66-yard scoring drive, most of which came from a 35-yard run by Jay Hedges and it was capped by Vaughan’s touchdown pass.

After an interception by Alex Caroom, one of four by the Warriors on the night, Little Rock Christian mounted a 79-yard scoring drive. Caroom also caught a 29-yard pass to set up the short scoring pass to Duncan.

Early in the fourth quarter, sophomore Hayden Hill, who also had an interception, scored on a 2-yard run with 11:20 left. The drive was set up by a fumble recovery, the Bears’ fifth turnover of the game.

“We played fine between the 30s we just could not punch it in,” Bears Coach Jim Withrow said. “We could not block, we could not catch the ball. I think we played about as bad as we could play.”

The Warriors’ final score came on a 7-yard run by Hedges with 4:12 left.

Vaughan, Caroom, Hill and Paxton Thomas all had interceptions.

“I thought our defense played very well,” said Kramer. “We were concerned about their speed.”
