Thieves make off with 100 watches in England

British police said Thursday that masked thieves wielding an ax and crowbars stole luxury watches worth $810,000 from a highend department store in Manchester as stunned shoppers looked on.

Police said three men entered a Selfridges store in the northwest English city just after 7 p.m. London time on Wednesday, smashed display cabinets with the ax and crowbars and stole about 100 watches before escaping in a black Mercedes driven by a fourthoffender.

Police on Thursday called it a brazen attack.

Greater Manchester police said the men were in and out of the store in less than 80 seconds and stole timepieces by luxury makers such as Cartier, Jaeger le Coultre and Hublot.
