— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1912 NEWPORT - The Grand Jury has indicted Justice of the Peace John R. Loftin Sr., charging him with malfeasance in office. The indictment states that on September 12 Justice Loftin issued a search warrant on the butcher shop of Isaiah Dyer from where it was charged liquor was being sold illegally. It is charged that Justice Loftin, after issuing the warrant, immediately informed Dyer of his action, so that the proprietor might be prepared for the visit of the officers.When the case came before the Circuit Court, Justice Loftin’s attorneys filed a demurrer which was sustained by Judge Jeffry. Prosecuting Attorney Erwin announced that he would appeal to the Arkansas Supreme Court. In the meantime, Justice Loftin is in no way disqualified from exercising the authority of his office.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1962

Arkansas is experiencing an apparent industrial surge. The Arkansas Newsletter, published by the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, lists nearly $2 million in new industries coming to various sections of the state. Since the Newsletter’s August report,more than $800,000 in additional industry has been planned.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1987 FORREST CITY - Next April, for the first time in 25 years, seniors at Forrest City High School can have a high school prom. The Forrest City School Board voted 4-2 on Sept. 14 to allow a prom to be held April 29, 1988, at the Forrest City Civic Center, if the students want it. The vote could end an absence of more than 20 years for the prom, which was eliminated in the wake of school integration to block the possibility of an integrated dance.

Park Hill’s effort to stimulate commercial growth in the North Little Rock neighborhood by bringing back alcohol sales has come up dry. Petitions circulated in Park Hill’s two voting precincts (518I and 518L) to allow the sale of liquor by the drink fell hundreds of valid signatures short of the required number, according to the Pulaski County clerk’s office. Not having alcohol in restaurants hurts business in Park Hill along John F. Kennedy Boulevard, supporters said.
