Bentonville Black 20, Springdale George 3

BENTONVILLE — Bentonville Black coach Chris Hutchens challenged his players at halftime Thursday night to focus on making big plays.

The message worked to perfection.

Black (3-1, 3-0 NWA Conference) scored 20 unanswered points in the second half and ran away with a victory over Springdale George (2-2, 1-2) in Tiger Stadium.

Lincoln defeated George in the eighth-grade game, 30-6.

“We couldn’t make any plays in the first half and that’s the reason we played the way we did,” Hutchens said. “At halftime, we just told the guys that they had to step up and make something happen.”

Tyrone Mahone, who had eight carries for 153 yards, started the attack with a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give his team a lead.

George quarterback Drake Wymer completed 8 of 11 passes for 71 yards. He also threw an interception late in the game to Black’s Mahone, who returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.

Black will host Fayetteville Ramay next week, while George hosts Rogers High.
