SILOAM SPRINGS — John Brown University in Siloam Springs has completed its effort to stop sending campus waste to landfills.
The school announced Tuesday that it uses recycling for many materials and packs off the rest for conversion to energy or food for hogs.
The university said about half of its trash is paper, plastic and metal, which is sorted and sent to recyclers. Waste that isn’t recycled is shipped to a Tulsa facility where it is converted to energy in what the school said is “emissions-free incineration.”
Food waste is sent for hog feed.
John Brown officials said the school provides recycling bins across the campus.
John Brown Vice President Steve Beers said the campus has a goal of being a good steward of the environment, and the effort makes economic sense.
