— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 16, 1912 LEWISVILLE - Reports from every portion of Lafayette county show that what is known as the “second crop” of army worms has literally cleaned the cotton crop and all within the past four days. Prior to September 10 no serious damage had been done, but today there is not a cotton field in this county that has not been stripped of every vestige of foliage. There will be no top crop at all.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 16, 1962

The Arkansas Education Association’s board of directors served notice yesterday that it is going ahead with the campaign to put Initiated Act 1 on the statute books by a popular vote in the November general election. In a preparedstatement issued after a 2 1/2 hour meeting here yesterday, the board said that its plan is not the only remedy for an “unwholesome situation,” but that “no other proposal has been advanced.” The reference is to the guarantee of 50 per cent of general revenue collections for the public schools contained in the act. The board said taxes leveled for school support are still being diverted for other uses,and that “it is the teachers and the children who are being shortchanged.” 25 YEARS AGO Sept. 16, 1987 HOT SPRINGS - Garland County Sheriff Clay White backed down Wednesday from a personal directive threatening to dismiss employees who apply for other jobs - but put workers “not producing” on notice. In a memo posted on a bulletin board Wednesday at the Garland County jail, White said workers who applied for other jobs, while still employed at the sheriff’s office, “will no longer have the assurance of employment with this department.” White acknowledged Wednesday, however, that county personnel policies do not permit such latitudes.

More than 1,000 Sherwood residents have signed a petition to allow them to vote on whether to create a municipal fire department. Leaders of the push to mesh Sherwood’s two fire districts into a city department said they’re upset about a fee increase the fire district boards instituted earlier this year. The increase more than doubled the annual fee.
