Egypt, other nations step up security to put down unrest

Egyptian riot police stand ready Saturday during an operation to clear protesters out of Cairo’s Tahrir Square after days of violent demonstrations. Despite the show of force, clashes continued to break out near the U.S. Embassy.

Under intense pressure from Washington, Egyptian security forces moved Saturday to end the violent protests around the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, arresting scores of people as political leaders struggled to deal with the fallout caused by the week of unrest.

Anti-U.S. Protests Die Down

Egyptian police on Saturday cleared out protesters who have been clashing with security forces for the past four days near the U.S. Embassy as most cities around the Muslim world reported calm a day. (By AP)
