The Deal With Delays

Posted: September 16, 2012 at 5:27 a.m.

Colton Shadrick, Farmington senior, listens to music Sept. 7 while waiting in the team’s locker room during a lightning delay in the Cardinals’ 25-0 weather-shortened win over West Fork.

When thunder is heard or a cloud-to-ground lightning bolt is seen or an approved lightning/storm detector indicates that lightning is within eight miles of the venue, the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location. Suspend play and take shelter immediately.

Lightning Guidelines

When thunder is heard or a cloud-to-ground lightning bolt is seen or an approved lightning/storm detector indicates that lightning is within eight miles of the venue, the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location. Suspend play and take shelter immediately.

Adhere to the 30-minute rule before resuming play, regardless of the point of interruption. Communicate with host school administration, visitor administration, and head coaches of both teams as conditions change.

Attempt to finish contest, if at all possible, once lightning disturbances subside. It is ultimately the responsibility of the game officials in communication with the host site administration as to whether to suspend the contest or extend the delay additionally.
