No charges for Fort Smith animal shelter

FORT SMITH — A prosecutor says he won’t file charges after investigating complaints about the Sebastian County Humane Society.
The investigation was prompted by a complaint that the Humane Society did not offer adequate exercise for its animals.
Fort Smith Prosecuting Attorney John Settle said there was not enough evidence to justify criminal charges. The Southwest Times Record reported the prosecutor also investigated claims over the shelter’s vaccination policies and its lack of certification with the state.
One complaint was filed by Cheryl Gilmore, the former head of Fort Smith’s Animal Services Advisory Board. Gilmore said she hopes the city adds new terms in the contract it’s currently renegotiating with the Humane Society.
Gilmore said the contract should include guidelines for sheltering, adoption and euthanasia.
