— The City Council's Street Committee reversed course Tuesday and called off improvements to East Center Street they had approved two weeks earlier.

Instead of adding several concrete bump-outs on the south side of Center Street to accommodate outdoor seating and bicycle racks, the city will repair the sidewalk at its current width as originally planned.

Terry Gulley, Transportation Services director, and Chris Brown, city engineer, said keeping the current design for Center Street wouldn't prevent other changes later.

Restaurant owners on the south side of Center Street supported alternative designs that would allow for outdoor seating. Several building owners on the north side of the street opposed any plans that would eliminate parking on a roughly 500-foot stretch of road between College Avenue and the downtown square.
