Haynes: Defense falls short

Posted: September 3, 2012 at 3:13 a.m.

Arkansas defender Chris Smith (center) celebrates after tackling Jacksonville State quarterback Marques Ivory in the second quarter Saturday in Fayetteville.

Arkansas defensive coordinator Paul Haynes tried to stress the positives of the Razorbacks’ 49-24 victory over Jacksonville State, but he chalked up the uneven season-opening performance to first-game mistakes and not enough emphasis on the fundamentals.

Good for Rasner and Mitchell. They are both deserving of the recognitions. Hopefully Rasner will be able to teach and encourage his teammates how to tackle with intention and to play wisely.
National championships are won with Defense and the team they faced in this opener is small potatoes compared to what awaits in two short weeks. Arm tackles won't get the job done, in the SEC especially. Good start for the 2012 Hogs that could have been even much, much better.
