Arkansas State splits

Arkansas State defeated Nebraska-Omaha 25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15 before losing to Tulsa 25-15, 26-24, 27-25 in the first day of play Friday at the Kansas Volleyball Invitational in Lawrence, Kan.

Megan Baska had a season-high 21 digs against Nebraska-Omaha. Kelsey Sullivan added 11 kills.

Allison Kearney led ASU with 28 assists and 12 digs against Tulsa.

Arkansas Tech wins

Junior Sara Motsinger turned in a 22-kill effort in Friday’s opening match, while freshman Kaci Jackson had 11 kills in both matches as Arkansas Tech (2-0) won two matches on Day 1 of the Christian Brothers University Invitational, picking up a 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 27-25 victory over Lincoln Memorial and a 25-11, 25-19, 19-25, 25-22 victory over Tiffin.

Harding loses, wins

Harding lost to Rockhurst 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25 and beat William Jewell 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 Friday in Pittsburg, Kan.

Junior outside hitter Mollie Arnold had 15 kills and 10 digs against Rockhurst and 23 kills and 11 digs against William Jewell.

Williams Baptist triumphs

Williams Baptist defeated Philander Smith College 25-18, 25-11, 25-7 and Mid-Continent University 25-10, 25-22, 25-21 Friday in Walnut Ridge.

The Lady Eagles improved to 7-0.

UALR falls

Arkansas-Little Rock lost both of its matches on Friday in Springfield, Mo., falling to Oral Roberts 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 15-6 and to Austin Peay 28-30, 25-20, 30-28, 21-25, 15-13.

Sophomore setter Marleen de Zoete had 46 assists and 10 digs against Oral Roberts and finished with a career-high 71 assists against Austin Peay.

SOCCER

Memphis beats ASU

Arkansas State lost to Memphis 4-0 at Mike Rose Stadium in Memphis.

Audrey Baldwin had five saves in 53 minutes for the Red Wolves. Aja Aguirre played the remainder of the match and made one save.

TENNIS

Surin loses

Arkansas freshman Kimberly-Ann Surin fell to Tornado Ali Black of Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday in the first round of the U.S. Open Juniors Qualifying 6-1, 6-2 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Surin was making her second consecutive appearance at the U.S. Open Juniors after losing last year in the first round to Jules Elbaba, currently a freshman at Virginia.

Surin qualified for the tournament by virtue of her ITF world ranking of 168. She was one of just three college players to qualify for the event.
