WINN SCORES FIVE TOUCHDOWNS IN PEA RIDGE WIN

— Dayton Winn put up impressive numbers last season for Pea Ridge.

He’s off to an even better start this season.

Winn rushed for 225 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead the Blackhawks to a 49-7 win over Elkins on Friday in the season opener for both teams.

Pea Ridge 49, Elkins 7

Why The Blackhawks won

Senior running back Dayton Winn rushed for 225 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Why The Elks lost

Elkins managed just 73 yards of offense and turned the ball over twice.

“Impressive, impressive performance by not only Dayton, but our entire bunch,” Pea Ridge coach Tony Travis said. “Dayton, he’s got some speed, but until he can get in that foot race phase of the play, you’ve got to have some blocking. So I was proud of the way we got off the ball upfront and I felt like we opened some holes for him.”

The Blackhawks (1-0) never trailed and jumped to a 17-0 lead after one quarter on a pair of Winn touchdowns, and a 32-yard field goal from Nick DeLeon.

Elkins (0-1) struggled against the Blackhawks for most the night and managed just 73 yards of total offense. The Elks got 49 of those yards on their lone scoring drive.

“They’re an awfully good football team,” Elkins coach Aaron Clark said. “That’s probably as good a Pea Ridge team as I’ve seen in many years. They pretty much dominated us.”

Pea Ridge added three more touchdowns in the second quarter to invoke the Arkansas Activities Association 35-point mercy rule to start a running clock in the second half.

But the Blackhawks reserves managed to score a late touchdown, driving 65 yards, capped by Dayton Winn’s younger brother Dakota’s 3-yard touchdown.

The game was played in a steady drizzle as Northwest Arkansas continued to see some effects from Tropical Storm Isaac.
